Cronk stars as Storm beat Canberra Raiders in tight game

Playing his 300th NRL diversion, Melbourne's Cooper Cronk didn't need the spotlight in the preparatory last against Canberra to be on him.

However, an overwhelming first half at AAMI Park implied Cronk was up front.

The Storm halfback turned out to be only the 25th player to achieve the breakthrough and drove his group on to their home ground, with the 30m line blemishes on either side of mostly changed to 300 in his honor.

With a notoriety for conveying when the weight is on, Cronk did only that.

He opened with a 40m pursue gathering up a grubber kick by his Raiders inverse Aidan Sezer, who was compelled to turn and pursue him down.

Cronk then scored Melbourne's first attempt in the 32nd moment when he kept running on to a Cameron Smith ball out of sham half and plunged over the line.

It was a unique minute with the pair the initial 300-gamers to play in the same line-up.

Players from both groups dashed in as strains bubbled over yet the ever-cool Cronk summoned his partners and drove them downfield to address them in a cluster as Smith kicked the transformation.

That gave the Storm a 8-6 lead to the joy of the generally genius Melbourne horde of 28,261.

They had more motivation to celebrate with the home side clutching win 14-12 following an exciting second half to book a great last billet and allow Cronk to star once more.

"These odds don't come around again and again," Cronk told the Nine Network after the preparatory last.

"It does right by you to play rugby alliance as a profession.

"It's incredible to celebrate 300; we are very brave work this week and 301 will be somewhat of a festival as well, ideally."
